Director of Major Gifts & Planned Giving
REPORTS TO: Executive Director DATE: January 14, 2010
SUPERVISES: Development Manager
SALARY RANGE: $38,000 to $43,000 depending on experience
JOB SUMMARY: The Director of Major Gifts & Planned Giving is responsible for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of major gift, sponsorship, endowment, and planned giving programs consistent with the needs and goals of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra (WSO). To that end, the Director of Major Gifts & Planned Giving will provide leadership and collaborate with staff and volunteers to carry out such programs. S/he will recommend to the Executive Director and Board and put into practice fundraising policies and procedures with the goal of building a year-round fund development program that demonstrates the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Fund Raising
- Plan, manage and implement the major gifts phase of the Annual Fund campaign; oversee the solicitation and acknowledgment process, maintenance of records, and establishment and disclosure within Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) guidelines; monitor progress and make adjustments as needed.
- Develop a comprehensive case statement for support of the WSO, based on the long-range plan. Work with Board to develop and direct year-round program to research, identify and cultivate new prospects and seek out new funding opportunities.
- Develop and implement a corporate sponsorship program; research and identify potential sponsors; prepare proposals and work with Board to identify matches between WSO’s program and each company's interests.
- Collaborate with marketing and fundraising staff to create planned giving materials for donors; create master calendar for planned giving activity; facilitate engagement of allied partners, targeted mailings, advertising and donor recognition programs.
- Oversee the development, production and distribution of all materials used to support the WSO’s fundraising campaigns.
Budgeting and Planning
- Assist the Executive Director and Board in establishing appropriate goals for the Annual Fund and other fundraising campaigns including endowment, capital and planned giving.
- Develop a plan for achieving those goals and establish a master calendar that outlines all fundraising events and campaigns; coordinate all activities with the WSO’s master calendar.
- Develop budgets for each campaign; monitor progress, adjusting plans when necessary.
- Work closely with the Executive Director and other designated staff in long-range planning for the Association; prepare budget projections as needed.
Board of Directors
- Staff the Development Committee of the Board and other volunteers enlisted to participate in the fund development program.
- Report to the Board and Executive Committee on progress of all fund-raising campaigns; provide other reports and statements as requested.
- Develop Board and volunteer leadership through participation in Board committee meetings and ongoing donor cultivation efforts; participate in identifying and recruiting new leadership.
- Foster the engagement of Board members in major gift cultivation
- Recommend fund-raising policies and procedures to the Executive Director and Board.
Administrative
- Organize staff and volunteers to carry out fund-raising campaigns; evaluate effectiveness of each campaign.
- Oversee the maintenance of donor files and records; develop and administer donor benefits programs in accordance with IRS guidelines.
- Provide periodic progress reports on all campaigns; prepare listings and financial statements as needed by the Board and staff.
- Serve as part of the senior management team to assist the Executive Director in setting and implementing administrative and artistic policies established by the Board.
- Hire, train, manage and evaluate the performance of all development staff, including interns and volunteers.
- Foster a team environment among WSO staff, Board members and volunteers to achieve fundraising goals.
Other
- Develop and maintain internal and external contacts to optimize fundraising efforts.
- Maintain ongoing contact with individual and business contributors, corporate sponsors and community leaders.
- Support Board and staff efforts to solicit in-kind contributions.
- Attend WSO concerts and events as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Requirements include: University degree, 3-5 years demonstrated success in fundraising, knowledge of fund development strategies and tactics, proficiency with MS Word & Excel plus fundraising database systems (knowledge of Sage FR100 an asset), superior interpersonal, organizational, communication (verbal and written), and presentation skills, available to attend WSO concerts and events as required.
